Valentines Day Is For The Birds

Charlie's card to me today was a home-made card that had two birds collecting string. In the card he wrote: "Want to be my mate and nest with me?"

To you this may sound strange, but to me..it was perfect! You see, Valentines day was originally a European holiday to celebrate the day the birds mated. This is much more romantic to me than a 2k diamond necklace or an over priced box of chocolates. I love Valentines Day because of the birds.

Birds have always been my favorite creatures. I can not see one fly without thinking it soars on the spirit of God. Charlie knew that gifts or frilly clothes were not what I would want. What I want to remember on Valentines Day is that nature is a gift to us from God, and Spring is on the way.

There is no better day to remember that than on this one. My Grandfather passed over into God's eternal realm early this Valentine morning, leaving behind his mate...my grandma.

So, now, even more than before, when the rest of the world buys candy and cards that sing, I will remember that each bird, plant, and person God gives us is a gift and on this day we celebrate life.

It's funny, by the end of the day today, I had almost forgot that it was Valentine's Day. This is beautiful.

How beautiful, and thoughtful. Today I am grateful for where I came from and what I leave behind. I am so grateful my father lived long enough for me to mature to the point that I could develop a loving and meaningful relationship. I was able to do that because of the lessons I learned from my children and my in-laws.

What beautiful memories all of you have of grandpa. I pray someday my grandchildren will say the same kind of things about this grandmother -- this is the most wonderful legacy any grandparent (or father) could leave behind. Bless you all.

I get so fed up with the commercialism and the emphasis on social status regarding who is attached to who - It's nice to remind ourselves that there's a more important kind of love to show.
